COUNCIL FOR AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

Council launches a series of articles on diversity

To promote ideas and thinking about diversity in the CSU, the CFA Council for Affirmative Action has begun to publish articles and commentaries that highlight the efforts and the excellence demonstrated by diverse faculty members.

These works will be available primarily through the Council for Affirmative Action’s page on the CFA website. New contributions to the web page will be referenced from time to time in California Faculty.

In the first of these articles, Teaching in the Trenches: Understanding a Diverse Student Body, co-authors Marilyn Easter and Mary Lynn Wilson— both of whom teach in the College of Business at San Jose State—illustrate a scenario that shows the challenges in teaching and understanding a culturally diverse group of students.

* 40 percent of CSU students come from households where English is not the main language spoken, and more than one-third consider themselves to be multiracial.

* Several CSU campuses are among the nation's leaders annually in the number of bachelor's degrees awarded to students of color, and almost every CSU campus is cited annually as "Hispanic Outlook's Publisher's Picks," a national list of colleges and universities that are doing the best job of serving Hispanic students
