ENDORSING & CAMPAIGNING
FOR CANDIDATES
|
CFAs endorsement process helps CFA identify the best candidates for legislative and constitutional office. It also helps candidates learn more about the CFA and the CSU.
The importance of CFAs endorsement process is underscored by the advent of term limits in 1990. As institutional memory fades, candidate identification, education and relationship-building becomes necessary to provide the legislative process with a positive working knowledge of the CSU, its faculty's and its students' needs.
CFA members interview and evaluate candidates on a range of issues: candidate views on collective bargaining in general and collective bargaining rights for faculty; funding for the CSU and public accountability regarding use of the funds; commitment to student and faculty diversity; and tax-reform measures. Candidates are selected based on their stands on these and other local issues.
CFA members work hard to help deliver the vote for endorsed candidates through voter registration, voter education (phone banking, mailings, leafleting, speaking to groups), vote-by-mail drives and hosting candidate forums.

About the Election
This fall, faculty members, retirees and other California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) members will vote to elect two Member-At-Large representatives to the CalPERS Board of Administration.
The CalPERS Board of Administration consists of 13 members - six elected "member" representatives, three appointed representatives, and four "ex officio" representatives. CFA has endorsed Cathy Hackett (Position A) and Kurato Shimada (Position B) in this year’s election.
On September 4, 2009, ballot material will be mailed directly to each eligible active and retired member. If you have questions regarding this information, contact the Board Elections Office at (916) 795-3007.
The winning candidates will serve a 4-year term and represent active and retired members in all aspects of CalPERS business - including benefit and membership issues, and oversight and investment of Fund assets.
Faculty members (and other state employees) are eligible to vote in this election if they are a CalPERS member active as of July 1, 2009 (employed at a CalPERS-covered agency) or a retired CalPERS member whose effective date of retirement is on or before July 1, 2009.
