The CFA Board of Directors took positions Friday on a number of important ballot propositions and electoral races. The top ballot measures affecting our state universities are Propositions 24 and 25.
Proposition 24 ends $1.3 billion in special tax loopholes for big corporations and ensures that a few big corporations pay their fair share of state taxes at a time when the state is making drastic budget cuts to public schools, health care and public safety.
Proposition 25 reforms California’s broken budget process by requiring a majority vote on the state budget and holds legislators accountable for failing to do their jobs. If they fail to pass a budget on time, they don’t get paid. And they can’t pay themselves back later.
The union took the following stances on ballot measures on the November ballot:
Proposition 19 – Legalize Marijuana
CFA Position: No Position
Proposition 20 – Redistrict Congressional Districts
CFA Position: Oppose
Proposition 21- Vehicle Surcharge for State Parks
CFA Position: Support
Proposition 22 – Prohibit the State from Taking Local Funds
CFA Position: Neutral
Proposition 23 – Suspend Air Pollution Control Laws (AB 32)
CFA Position: Oppose
Proposition 24 – Repeal Corporate Tax Loopholes
CFA Position: Support
Proposition 25 – Majority Vote Budget
CFA Position: Support
Proposition 26 – Two-Thirds Vote Requirement for Fees
CFA Position: Oppose
Proposition 27 – Eliminate Commission on Redistricting
