On Tuesday the U.S. House of Representatives passed a landmark aid package for struggling states that includes $10 billion in education jobs funding. The U.S. Department of Education estimates it will save 161,000 jobs in public schools across the country.
This funding, which was approved by the Senate last week, will help many schools throughout the country decrease class sizes and restore critical programs students need to be successful.
President Obama said he will sign the $26-billion aid package for cash-poor states -- a bill that could be worth more than $2.4 billion for California.
During the course of the campaign to pass this bill NEA affiliates – including CFA – generated 102,000 calls to Congress, 42,000 postcards and 301,000 e-mails in support of this bill.
The bill will save the California general fund $1.28 billion in MediCal costs. Another $1.2 billion in federal funds would go to local school districts in the state.
