Two state lawmakers have called for an independent review of the use of police force against students and faculty at the Trustees’ meeting on November 16.
Assemblymember Marty Block (AD-78), chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, and Senator Alan Lowenthal (SD-27), chair of the Senate Education Committee, sent a letter to CSU Chancellor Reed asking him to initiate an “independent external review” of the event.
The letter states: “….there was significant disagreement between (CSU Management) and other participants at the hearing about what occurred at the CSU Board of Trustees’ meeting, who initiated the disturbance and the police response.
“We believe it is important that the legislature have a clear understanding of this situation, and we would like to request that you initiate an independent external review to determine what occurred and the appropriateness of the police response in order to ensure that we can learn from experience and prevent future such incidents.”
Earlier, CFA had sent a letter to Lowenthal and Block urging follow-up action to a legislative hearing in December in response to incidents at UC Davis as well as the CSU Chancellor’s office.
