Legislation to expand California’s public records law to include campus auxiliaries and foundations was approved by the senate last week and sent to the governor.
Senate Bill 330 – which would apply California’s public records laws to auxiliary organizations tied to our public higher education systems – is authored by State Senator Leland Yee and co-sponsored by CFA and the California Newspaper Publishers Association.
The bill was approved by the Senate by a 22-10 vote.
While the governor vetoed a similar bill last year, saying it could scare off donors and volunteers by compromising their privacy, CFA and Yee have amended SB 330 by exempting most volunteers and donors who wish to remain anonymous.
