Resolution in Support of the March 1st & 5th Actions
San Francisco State University Chapter of the California Faculty Association

Whereas additional cuts to public education and social services are looming because of the California budget deficit; and

Whereas the income of the rich has been growing exponentially while their taxes have been declining, thanks to their aggressive lobbying and generous campaign donations to politicians; and

Whereas public education and social services in California have been cut by billions of dollars during the past decade while student tuition has been raised, in some cases as much as 300 percent, at public universities; and

Whereas the Occupy Education Norcal organizing meeting took place on December 10, 2011, with over 100 people present, including many from unions such as the Oakland Education Association, UPTE (University Professional and Technical Employees), American Federation of Teachers, California Faculty Association, several SEIU locals, and the UAW local representing graduate students at UC Berkeley; and

Whereas those assembled voted to organize two events – (1) a Day of Action on March 1 where campuses and work places would organize their own events, including possible regional events, and (2) a March on Sacramento to Occupy the State Capitol – in order to demand full funding for public education and social services by taxing the corporations and the rich; and

Whereas public education is a public good and is the cornerstone of a democratic society, a vibrant economy, and the social and intellectual development of every individual so that dismantling public education, while saving the rich from paying higher taxes, has a crippling effect morally, rationally, and economically on society as a whole; and

Whereas government social services to a large part provide a crucial safety net for the most vulnerable members of society and therefore serve as a measure of society’s moral standards;

Therefore Be It Resolved that the San Francisco State University California Faculty Association Executive Board endorse the March 1 Day of Action and the March 5 State Capitol Occupation and provide resources to help organize these events and urge the statewide California Faculty Association to do the same.

 Approved by the CFA San Francisco State University Chapter Executive Board at its meeting on January 24, 2012.
