CFA’s Deputy Political Director must have substantial experience in candidate, issue or proposition campaigns and implementing a political program around organizational goals, preferably in a union setting. Legislative knowledge and experience is a plus. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Participate in all aspects of the political/government relations program, including CFA’s work on campaigns (candidate, proposition, independent expenditure), political & legislative communications, trainings of staff and members, and participation, as needed, in CFA’s legislative program.
- Coordinate and direct voter registration projects statewide on CSU campuses.
- Serve as primary political field staff for Northern California.
- Develop and maintain productive working relationships with affiliates, partners in labor, and allied community organizations.
- Represent CFA in meetings of ad-hoc political coalitions and community partners.
- Within the member governance structure, develop, devise and implement strategies to advance CFA’s political and legislative agenda.
- Organize and coordinate CFA Lobby Day in Sacramento with other staff.
- Manage, supervise and train people of varying levels of experience in political field work, organizing and political communication.
The position of Deputy Political Director, a management level position, requires a high level of judgment and ability to take initiative and work independently; the Deputy Political Director must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet strict deadlines. Additionally, the Deputy Political Director must:
- Work as a member of a team operating under a member governance structure.
- Possess excellent writing, verbal and analytical skills.
- Have extensive knowledge of California’s political, legislative and budget process.
- Provide support to CFA members, leaders & staff during political and legislative efforts.
- Manage effective relationships with candidates, elected officials, CFA Members & leadership and professional colleagues.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with CFA members and leaders.
Salary/Benefits/Other requirements: CFA offers a fully paid benefit package including medical, dental, vision and generous paid vacations. Salary is commensurate with experience. Some travel is required for this position.
