Los Angeles Regional Rally
April 26, 2004 Downtown Los Angeles
Getting on the Bus
Students and faculty from Cal State Los Angeles board buses to transport them to downtown L.A., where they will meet their peers from other area campuses to protest the governor's proposed budget cuts for 2004/05.
Dozens of buses transported students and faculty from the seven L.A.-area campuses to the protest outside the governor's downtown office on Spring Street.
Save the CSU
About 3,000 people from seven L.A.-area campuses converged in front of the state office building where Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger holds his Los Angeles office. They blocked of the street for two blocks and filled the air with chants of "No More Cuts" and "They say cut back, we say fight back." The crowd heard speakers from the California Faculty Association, other labor leaders, pundit Arianna Huffington and a student band.
Media Circus
More than 40 media outlets covered the Monday afternoon event, broadcasting the cuts to the CSU issue across the country.
This demonstration, however, was only the beginning. Nearly each of the 23 CSU campuses held at least one action between April and June to inform and educate the campus communities and the public about what the cuts would mean to public higher education in the state.
