CSU Labor Council Statement of Solidarity on Layoffs

November 12, 2020

CSU’s Future Requires Investment in Students, Faculty, and Staff, Not Layoffs

As the state and nation cope with stemming the spread of COVID-19 and rescuing our economy, CSU administration is taking a different path: digging itself into a deeper hole.

One of California’s largest employers, the CSU has chosen to lay off hundreds of employees, jeopardizing their livelihoods and taking away healthcare for workers and their families during a public health crisis.

CFA Statement on the Murder of George Floyd

May 29, 2020

George Floyd’s public execution is shocking, but not surprising given the persistence of anti-Black racism and white supremacy that dehumanizes Black people.  It is one in a long chain of similar transgressions and murders, most recently including Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, and people are taking to the streets because the United States has failed to address this.  CFA is a union representing faculty in the California State University System, one that is dedicated to anti-racism and social justice.  As scholar activists, we have an obligation to address the structural r

CFA Statement of Support for Striking UC Grad Workers

February 21, 2020

The California Faculty Association supports the striking graduate student TAs/Readers of UAW Local 2865 at UC Santa Cruz and other UC campuses who are demanding greater compensation for the invaluable work they provide to students, staff, and faculty within the University of California system.

We encourage the University of California and the UAW to re-open contract negotiations and respond to the serious financial crisis faced by graduate students and educators across our state, as wages have not kept pace with the sky-rocketing cost of living in California.

Open Letter to the CSU Board of Trustees
Our Next Chancellor

November 20, 2019

We need a Chancellor who is devoted to public education and works tirelessly to secure state funding for the CSU. Our new Chancellor would know that rather than putting up more barriers to student access to the CSU (such as impaction, additional quantitative reasoning admission requirements, and suppressing enrollment), we need more state funding to fulfill the promise of four-year public higher education for all of California’s students.

Public Comment on Quantitative Reasoning and Ethnic Studies
By Associate VP Sharon Elise to the CSU Board of Trustees

November 20, 2019

Let’s talk about the irony of the CSU advancing a new admissions requirement for quantitative reasoning that is prohibitive to student access while pushing against Ethnic Studies that is conducive to student of color success, in fact to all student success.

Let’s put this in historical context.  We know, based on CFA’s Equity Interrupted paper, we have a pattern of diminished financial support for the CSU once demographics changed.  In short, once those students became students of color, and as we got less white, we got less money.
