CFA-Sponsored AB 46 close to approval

Assembly Bill 46, sponsored by CFA and authored by Assemblymember Richard Pan, passed the California State Senate 23-11 and is on its way back to the State Assembly for a concurrence vote.

The bill would require the CSU Trustees to make available to the CSU Academic Senate the data being collected on students when they take online classes through the CSU.

“The need for this bill became apparent last year,” explains CFA Political Action & Legislative Committee Chair Kevin Wehr. “Faculty at San Jose State learned that the students’ pass-rates in experimental MOOCs were dismal. The Academic Senate formally requested data to evaluate the MOOCs but didn’t get all the needed data.”

Wehr added, “We in the faculty can’t ensure our students are getting a good quality education when we can’t get complete information on an experiment like this.”
