Faculty Rights Tip of the Week: Department Chairs are Faculty and in the Bargaining Unit

Department Chairs, while carrying out some administrative duties in assigning work to faculty, are not management personnel.  Department Chairs are faculty, and like all CSU faculty, Department Chairs are represented by CFA.

In addition to teaching, performing research and/or producing discipline specific works, and service, Department Chairs are often instructed by deans or other administrators to take actions that impact the terms and conditions of employment of other faculty.  As a result, sometimes being a chair can turn out to be a challenging experience.

On the other hand, Department Chairs who are familiar with our faculty contract and work with CFA leaders can be among the best advocates for faculty. We encourage Department Chairs to work with CFA chapters on how best to follow the Collective Bargaining Agreement, particularly in assigning work to lecturers and evaluating the work of faculty.

On many campuses, CFA chapters put on events specifically tailored for Department Chairs, and we encourage you to be on the lookout for CFA sponsored events of this nature.
