Faculty Rights Tip of the Week: Important Deadlines for Probationary Faculty

This weekly CFA Headlines feature offers a brief “Faculty Rights Tip” or short information piece about the faculty contract.

FACULTY RIGHTS TIP: Important Deadlines for Probationary Faculty

As we enter the spring term most campuses are now well into the Review, Tenure, and Promotion (RTP) cycles for probationary faculty. There are two important deadlines that all probationary faculty should know.

10 days to submit a rebuttal. Faculty have 10 calendar days to submit a written rebuttal and/or request a meeting be held to discuss the negative recommendation of any level of review.

42 days to appeal a final decision. Faculty have 42 calendar days to file an appeal of a final negative RTP decision. You should contact your CFA faculty rights representative immediately if you receive a negative tenure, promotion, or reappointment decision. Do not wait.

It’s important to know that the “clock” starts on the date that you receive the review or final decision, not necessarily the date on the memo.

It’s also important to know that the final RTP decision on the campus may come from the president or the president’s “designee.” On some campuses the final decision is left to the provost.

If you receive a bad review at any level, or if you receive a notice that you will not be reappointed, tenured, or promoted you should contact your CFA faculty rights representative immediately.
