NEA Action: Send your Butterfly postcard this week to protect Dreamers

This is CFA-affiliate National Education Association’s “Higher Ed Week of Action” when faculty are asked to advocate for the federal 2017 Dream Act. It’s a time to stand up for our immigrant, Dreamer, and DACA-mented students, families, and colleagues.

We must raise our voices to keep them safe.

This proposed legislation would protect the 800,000-plus young people who were brought to the U.S. as children and have been protected by the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. As most readers of CFA Headlines know, this fall President Trump ended DACA, leaving them vulnerable to deportation.

NEA asks faculty to do two things this week:

  1. Send online “butterfly postcards” to members of Congress, urging them to pass the Dream Act now.
  2. Dial 1-855-764-1010 to call your members of Congress.

As faculty on campus have observed, many of our students are desperately worried about their families, friends, and their own futures. Some have retreated into the shadows, and others have left school altogether, doing what they can to plan for this upheaval to their lives.

CFA Vice President Charles Toombs says, “It is essential that our members of Congress hear from us. Send a postcard today urging them to pass the 2017 Dream Act. They need to know why you support Dreamers.”
