FIGHTING FOR YOUR RIGHTS: Faculty rights advocates from around the state met on Feb. 16 to learn more about representation of faculty in the CSU during a training held at CFA Headquarters in Sacramento.

CFA members and staff were trained on topics including retention, tenure, and promotion advocacy, as well as lecturer rights, and the advocacy connected to Article 16 and Executive Orders 1096 and 1097.  CFA is fortunate to have a dedicated, hard-working group of activists who enforce the Collective Bargaining Agreement and help our members navigate workplace issues. Statewide trainings are held twice a year, and campus and/or regional meetings are held as needed. If you are interested in faculty rights work, please get in touch with your chapter executive board.

TAKING ACTION: The California Teachers Association, National Educators Association, American Federation of Teachers and others are planning actions and events to send messages to policymakers that action must be taken to end school violence. NEA and AFT are encouraging educators throughout the country to wear orange on March 14, when the Women’s March has announced a National School Walkout. Several survivors of the Florida school shooting are planning a student-led march and protest, “March for Our Lives,” in DC on March 24.

On April 20, the anniversary of the Columbine tragedy, NEA is calling on communities to take action and is asking organizers to send details about their events and ideas. Click here to read more about the April 20 National Day of Action Against Gun Violence in Schools.

IN THE NEWS: Students for Quality Education at Sacramento State made the news recently for recruiting students for the # FreeTheCSU protest on April 4. An article in the State Hornet detailed efforts by Jorge Quintana and his SQE peers, who have been bringing banners and information to the campus quad. On March 6, SQE members will march to President Nelsen’s office to ask that professors allow their students to miss class on April 4, when students, faculty, and community allies will be protesting the state’s disinvestment in the CSU and rallying to urge Gov. Brown to #FreeTheCSU and #FundTheDream. Click here to read more.
