Thursday: CFA hosts briefing on equity in CA higher education

Lawmakers, faculty, and experts will come together to discuss the future of public higher education in California during a special briefing Thursday at the State Capitol in Sacramento.

The forum, “Equity in California Higher Education: Where We Were, Where We Are, and a Pathway to Free Higher Education,” will examine trends within the California State University and its impact on students and Californians.

Panelists include:

  • Assemblymember Jose Medina, Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee
  • Assemblymember Phil Ting, Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee
  • Melina Abdullah, Professor and Chair of Pan-African Studies at Cal State LA, Black Lives Matter lead/organizer
  • Margarita Berta-Ávila, Professor of Education at Sacramento State University
  • Alma Hernández, Executive Director of SEIU California
  • Robert Shireman, Senior Fellow at The Century Foundation

The briefing, which will be led by CSU San Bernardino Professor Emeritus Susan Meisenhelder, will also include discussion of findings from CFA’s new report, “Equity, Interrupted: How California Is Cheating Its Future.”
