CSU community encouraged to use union hotels
Statement from the CSU Labor Council

January 31, 2017

To: Chancellor White, Trustees, and Members of the CSU Community
From: The CSU Labor Council

The leadership of the CSU Labor Council, including representatives from Academic Professionals of California (APC), California Faculty Association (CFA), California State University Employees Union (CSUEU), State Employees Trades Council United (SETCU), and UAW (United Auto Workers), urges the Office of the Chancellor, members of the Board of Trustees, Campus Presidents, CSU administrators, and all members of the CSU community to patronize union-friendly and fair hotels.

The California State University is a union employer, and we are proud of this fact.  The over 49,000 faculty and staff in the CSU are represented by labor unions, providing them with a voice in their working conditions. Unions provide members and their families more financially stable jobs that allow for a better quality of life.

For many working people, becoming a part of a union is a life-changing experience, providing a brighter future for themselves and their families.  Many of our students and family members work in the service industry, including at hotels.  Workers at union hotels generally receive better wages and benefits and have a voice in their work places.  We want this for all Californians so that they can be better citizens and afford to send their children (and themselves) to the CSU.

Our union partner UNITE HERE, the hotel and hospitality workers’ union representing over 270,000 members in the United States and in Canada, has developed the “Fair Hotel Program” where organizations can show their support for good hospitality jobs by prioritizing union hotels for conferences and business meetings.  Organizations can find fair hotels and know what hotels are on the boycott list at

As a state agency, the CSU has an obligation to the communities that it serves to patronize employers who pay fair wages and work with their employees to create good working conditions.  We encourage all members of the CSU community to use union hotels out of concern for all Californians.
