California Faculty Association Celebrates Victory of Governor-Elect Gavin Newsom

The Long-Time Higher Education Advocate Brings Optimism That California Will Invest in the California State University System and Ensure Every Eligible Student Has Access to an Affordable, Quality Education

Sacramento, CA – Today, the California Faculty Association released the following statement about the victory of Governor-elect Gavin Newsom, which may be attributed to CFA President Jennifer Eagan, a professor at CSU East Bay, one of 23 California State University campuses:

Governor-elect Newsom has a long history of fighting for public higher education in California, and the faculty of the CSU believes his commitment to the People’s University is as strong as ever.

CFA has long supported Governor-elect Newsom, as he has worked often with faculty and public higher education advocates for policies to open the doors of the CSU to every eligible Californian, and to create a dedicated source of CSU funding to achieve that goal.

CFA, CSU students, and policymakers have generated great momentum for reinvestment in the CSU. Tens of thousands of students who are qualified to attend the CSU are still being turned away. We believe Gavin Newsom will stand up for those students and quality public higher education.

Gavin Newsom has stood with the faculty when we were fighting against proposed tuition increases on our students. He has consistently and unwaveringly been there, on the right side of the issues, including our members’ fight for a fair contract—and we are looking forward to working with him for years to come to ensure that California’s economy and our society have the college graduates we need to thrive.”

Leading up to the November 6 election,  CFA held a rally at San Diego State University, where more than 300 faculty, students and community members showed their support. Video of the rally, including comments from Dr. Eagan and Governor-elect Newsom are available on Facebook and Youtube.
