CFA applauds Gov. Brown for signing bill regarding release time for California State University union members

Sacramento — Gov. Jerry Brown on Saturday, Sept. 24, signed a law requiring the California State University to grant release time to faculty and staff who are union members and are involved in leadership activities of an affiliated union.

The law, authored by Assembly Member Jimmy Gomez, D-Los Angeles, was sponsored by the California Faculty Association.

“This is a great achievement for CSU faculty and puts us on equal footing with our K-12 and community college colleagues,” said Susan Green, CFA Treasurer and a director on the California Teachers Association Board of Directors. “The law gives us statutory parity, and sets in place a clear process for release time for union members within the CSU system. We appreciate Assembly Member Gomez being a champion for CSU union members, and for the Legislature and Gov. Brown recognizing the need to pass this important legislation.”
