Cal State L.A. held a mid-day a panel and discussion on why public education is being cut, criticized and privatized.

The panel “Fighting the Assault on Public Education” was organized by Kimberly King in conjunction with The Cross Cultural Centers at Cal State LA, The Academic Professionals of California Mobilizing Committee, The American Communities Program at Cal State LA, International Union, UAW Local 4123 and The Charter College of Education at CSULA and endorsed by SQE. 

It featured William H. Watkins, Professor of Education at University of Illinois, Chicago, Author of The Assault on Public Education, Peter Somberg, Kindergarten Teacher, President of the Inglewood Teachers Association, Judy Olson, Cal State LA Faculty, Suzanne McEvoy, Cal State LA Staff and Lawrence Gandara, Cal State LA Student and was moderated by Panni Wilson, Cal State LA Faculty. 

This event had a standing-room-only crowd of some 300 students, faculty, and staff. Statewide CFA representatives, Derek Chernow and Michelle Cerecerez were in attendance.

Later in the week, the CFA chapter at L.A. hosted several movie screening and discussions of “For Profit, the Inside Look at the Privatization of Education.” The screenings were hosted by the CFA Lecturers’ Council and Students for Quality Education.
