CFA sends letter of support for Ethnic Studies in public schools
AB 2016 would require model curriculum development by 2019

By incorporating ethnic studies courses into high school curriculum, we are confident students … will have greater understanding, respect and tolerance for the wide variety of ethnic groups and cultures in California.

CFA sent to following letter of support for
AB 2016: Ethnic Studies for All

To: The Honorable Luis Alejo, California State Assembly

Re: AB 2016 (Alejo) Pupil instruction: ethnic studies – SUPPORT

On behalf of the California Faculty Association (CFA) and the 26,000 professors, lecturers, librarians, counselors and coaches we represent, we are pleased to write in support of Assembly Bill 2016, relative to ethnic studies.

CFA is fortunate to have the unique opportunity to serve one of the largest and most diverse university student populations in the country. As this state’s entire student population becomes increasingly diverse, we recognize both the challenge and opportunity that this presents. Students of all ages and backgrounds can learn, often first hand, about the customs, history and traditions of the various racial and ethnic groups that make up our state; however, it is key that we have the appropriate standards in place to help facilitate this important part of learning and personal growth.

We rely on our public high schools to help prepare students as they transition to university curriculum and culture. By incorporating ethnic studies courses into high school curriculum, we are confident that students enrolling in the universities our union serves will have an even greater understanding, respect and tolerance for the wide variety of ethnic groups and cultures in California.

For these reasons, we are pleased to write to you in support of your AB 2016, and on behalf of the entire California Faculty Association, we’d like to thank you for authoring this important piece of legislation.
