Contract Bargaining Continues!
The Fight Continues! Keep up with the latest from contract bargaining!
Dear Unit 3,
Our bargaining team has met two times this semester and have come to the conclusion that the administration doesn’t really want to bargain, they want to clawback our wins and clawback our power. This post covers where we are, the latest on proposals from management, and how to show up to show our power in the coming days and weeks.
We are all needed right now, so get ready now by getting and staying informed!
What are we bargaining for?
You can read the full list of our proposals on the dedicated CFA Bargaining Website (bookmark for updates!).
At the last Meeting
Two weeks ago our member-lead bargaining team met with management to work on coming to an agreement. At the last meeting, management revealed their true intentions behind stalling for the past year. Instead of engaging in good faith, CSU management has focused on wasting time and is now demanding take-backs, like:
- Restricting our abilities to file grievances for non-discrimination violations – need an accommodation that the university isn’t fulfilling? This would kneecap your union support for this working condition.
- Limiting opportunities for CFA to get involved prior to disciplinary actions – need representation? Management doesn’t think you should have it!
- Fighting our attempts to broaden parental leave and other “leave with pay” extensions – need to spend time with the most important things and can’t afford to lose your pay, or potentially your job because of it? Management doesn’t seem to care about the reality of the time needed in these cases.
- Attacking faculty sabbaticals – proposing that campus presidents have unlimited say over whether and how sabbaticals are granted.
- Cutting off advanced notice of layoffs – They don’t want to consult us in advance of layoffs, as is currently legally required. Instead, they want to continue laying off our hardworking Unit 3 members at a moment’s notice.
And, we anticipate that more proposals to clawback established wins could be coming in future meetings.
What does this mean?
Our fight continues! They want to attack our power, but it won’t work! They are pushing back against all of our proposals because they recognize that union power shifts the balance away from total management control. They are not going to hand us anything – they never have – we will have to show up to show our strength and demand it – just like we always have done!
Our bargaining team is rightfully frustrated but we continue to show up in force. Make sure you are part of the conversation by joining a caucus room on bargaining days and attending a townhall forum following all bargaining sessions.
How to Show Up for Bargaining
As bargaining for our next contract continues, CFA provides opportunities to caucus on bargaining days and to recap developments in the following days at a townhall forum. Keep an eye on your emails for opportunities to register for a caucus or town hall.
They think we are weak. They need to see us, and our power. We all need to show up and show management they are wrong. We are always stronger in union.
