Overview

Our CFA colleague (and friend), John Caravello, was abducted by ICE while protesting the Glass House Raid in Camarillo, on July 10th. John is now facing a federal felony charge for assault with a deadly weapon. The weapon in question is a tear gas canister ICE threw at peaceful protestors, which John safely cleared from the area. The arraignment and trial process is likely to extend over many months, and John needs solidarity and support while things move forward.

The charges against John have been manufactured to repress not just him, but all those who will stand up and speak out against ICE’s violent, extra-judicial assaults. It is time to take the target off of John’s back, so that he can get out from under the weight of unjust prosecution to focus on teaching and community work.

Free John. Drop the Charges.

The attacks on educators around issues of free speech in particular, are not going to decrease, and it is unlikely John will be the only or last CFA activist/member who is impacted. Let’s come together as one to support John at his arraignment and again at his trial.

Trial Start Date: Tuesday, March 24, 2026 (Please note that we are anticipating a five-day trial.)

Please note: There is a possibility that the trial start date might change. While we hope to be notified before March 24, there is a possibility that we will learn about this change on the day of the trial. We recognize that this uncertainty is not ideal for those making travel and work arrangements to support John, and we truly appreciate your understanding.

The attack on John is an attack on all who value the right to free speech and assembly, without which we cannot claim to live in a democratic nation.

Contact local lawmakers to insist they fight for John, but more broadly for the survival of our constitutional right to free speech.
