No Improvements to Workload or Appointment If We Don't Take This Pledge

Across the CSU system, faculty struggle with unsustainable workloads in classrooms, libraries, mental health clinics, and athletic facilities. Lecturer faculty face economic hardship while it takes years to meet requirements to improve job security.
If you can accept these conditions persisting for the next few years, you don’t need to do anything. But many CFA members know we can win a stronger contract, including improvements to our articles on Workload and Appointment.
If you want a better future for yourself and your colleagues, sign the CFA Solidarity Pledge to commit to fighting for the working conditions we deserve. The more of us that pledge to take job actions together, the stronger the ability we have to win our bargaining proposals.
Here’s what we have proposed regarding Workload:
- Courses need to have predictable caps on enrollment
- Research must be compensated
- Counselors and librarians must have more flexibility in their work schedules
- Faculty on temporary contracts should be paid for service work
And here are highlights from our Appointment proposal:
- Reduce a requirement to only four years of consecutive service before faculty on temporary appointments reach their three-year contract
- The designation of a long-term continuing appointment
- The time base of a subsequent 3-year appointment will be based on the time base of the completed appointment or the greatest time base the faculty member taught during that prior appointment (rather than the last year of that appointment)
- Lecturer faculty can be recommended for a tenure-line position
- Require that official notice for appointments be given at least four weeks prior to the start of the appointment
- Substantially change the order of assignment to strengthen seniority rights and the process by which a faculty on a temporary appointment can become full-time
- Require that each campus have a minimum of 50% of its counselor faculty be appointed into either tenured or probationary appointments
CSU management has rejected nearly every CFA proposal for both articles. Management also proposed nonsensical modifications to a few of them.
To win our proposals, we need as many faculty members as possible to sign our pledge. If you have already signed, talk with your colleagues about why it is important to do the same. If you are not a member, join today and be an active participant in our union.
Reach out to your field representative or chapter president for more ways to get involved. Together, we will win the contract we deserve, including more sustainable workloads and better job security.
