Register for Scholarship, Labor, and Collective Liberation Brown-Bag Conversation

The CFA Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Caucus is hosting a virtual brown-bag conversation titled “Scholarship, Labor, and Collective Liberation” on Friday, October 23 from 1 to 2 p.m. All CFA members are welcome to attend and can register here.
Speakers, hosts, and attendees will explore how our scholarship can stay connected to movements for collective liberation. They will also discuss ties between scholarship, community struggles, and our organizing as educators and union members. Presentations will be followed by discussion and audience Q&A.
Valerie Francisco-Menchavez, CFA San Francisco member and sociology professor, and Simmy Makhijani, CFA Northridge member and Asian American studies assistant professor, are the featured speakers. The scholar-activists work in Filipino diasporic studies and South Asian American studies.
The tri-chairs of the APIDA Caucus organized the event. They are as follows:
- Jaimy Magdalena Mann, San Francisco State race and resistance studies lecturer
- Khanum Shaikh, CSU Northridge gender and women’s studies associate professor
- Sang Hea Kil, San Jose State justice studies professor
“We have an agenda and it’s to spark dialogue,” Mann said. “We want people to have ideas, share ideas, and continue the conversation.”
Mann added that the tri-chairs want the brown-bag to help get people excited as CFA escalates the contract campaign to Fund the Classroom, Not the Boardroom. They also hope attendees will join the APIDA Caucus.
CFA members are also welcome to invite trusted students or colleagues to the event. To attend the brown-bag, register here.
