On July 15, 2025, the CalPERS Board of Administration approved health plan premiums for the 2026 calendar year with an overall weighted premium rate increase of 8.21%. To see the % premium change for your specific Basic or Medicare plan, click here.
It’s important to note that healthcare providers negotiate rates directly with CalPERS. This means that CFA and other CSU unions are not involved in the increase in health plan rates, nor is this something we can negotiate at the bargaining table with CSU management.
You can learn more about health benefits offered through the CalPERS system in Article 32 of our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
While we may not be able to negotiate the increased costs of our healthcare plans, we can fight for fair pay that keeps pace with inflation and the rising cost of living. Pay increases (outlined in Article 31 in our CBA) are fought for and negotiated at the bargaining table. Our CFA Bargaining Team is at the table right now to demand—among other things—fair compensation for our faculty.
During our last negotiations, we were able to secure a 5% General Salary Increase (GSI) for all faculty, retroactive to July 1, 2023, as well as a 5% GSI for all faculty, effective July 1, 2024. Additionally, we were able to raise the minimum salaries for the lowest-paid faculty in Ranges A and B by $3,000, retroactive to July 1, 2023. Some faculty were also eligible for a 2.65% Service Salary Increase (SSI). As a result, many faculty received more than a 10% salary increase.
These wins were the direct result of our collective action and our courage to demand that CSU management improve our working conditions. We must continue to organize to ensure that our colleagues can continue to look after themselves and their families with the dignity they deserve.
