Dear Faculty Colleagues,

Over the summer, we had a big win for Unit 3! As you probably know, we have been in a budget battle that resulted in a notice of potential layoffs from the Chancellor’s Office.

On Monday 7/21, we received official notice from systemwide labor relations that no layoffs of faculty will be forthcoming under their notice given to us earlier in the spring. This notification, along with a transition to the new fiscal year, effectively rescinds their earlier notice of potential layoffs and eliminates that threat for the foreseeable future. Should the potential for layoffs arise again, the CSU would have to issue CFA a new notice and engage in negotiations under Article 38 of the contract.

This is a huge victory for faculty that should bring all of us a sense of relief for the coming academic year. CFA leaders engaged in extensive discussions and negotiations with administration throughout the spring to find alternatives to layoffs, including the Early Exit Program, and we are happy to share that those efforts were successful.

We would not have been able to achieve this win without the continued support of our members – our strength is in our collective and there has never been a better time to join your union if you haven’t already. Together we will continue to hold administration accountable, protect our jobs, and fight for the quality education that our students deserve.

In solidarity,

Patrick Oberle, PhD
