The Future is Not Inevitable!

Last semester, we wrote about the push to stop the funding cuts to the library services. Still to date, almost $500,000 in funding cuts are set to go through. Over the last semester, winter break, and the start of the spring, librarian faculty members and the CFA chapter leadership have been developing a campaign to push back on these cuts. We need the support of the entire campus, the student body, and the outlying community if possible. We need you to do something simple, right now!

It will only take 1 minute, maybe longer if you’re on EDUROAM.

Add Your Name: Sign the Petition to Fund the Library!

Your Library Faculty, in coordination with chapter leaders, have created a petition to help restore the funding that is slated to be slashed. We need to communicate to the administration that these cuts need to come from somewhere else.

By signing, you help show our power by agreeing to “demand that Sacramento State prioritize funding for our core mission of teaching & learning and restore the University Library budget.”

By signing, you ask that Sacramento State campus administration:

  1. Restore the University Library’s materials and operations budget in Spring 2026, without cuts to other Colleges.
  2. Continue to prioritize funding for Academic Affairs
  3. Be fully transparent on budgeting issues within Academic Affairs, through frequent, clear communication to all constituents.

By signing, you help show our provost and president that “The University is not an enterprise, and investment in our students should focus on the quality of their education.”

How did we get here?

The petition reads: “As a result of budget cuts imposed by campus administration, the University Library does not have the funding to maintain access to critical resources. The impact currently amounts to $472,953 of cuts to databases, periodicals, and other resources, which will significantly impact research, creative activity, teaching, & learning across all seven colleges, in addition to cutting back Library open hours. These continued cuts are not sustainable. The University Library is central to our academic mission as a campus.”

What is going to be impacted by the funding cuts?

Simply, everyone. “This cut will harm our faculty, students, and staff – as well as the greater Sacramento community. Further, this potentially impacts our ability to fully engage as an R2 research-designated university.

Students rely on Library resources to complete assignments, Library spaces to study in, and librarian expertise to help explore their research interests. The Library also provides valuable student employment and career training. Faculty are having to redesign classes that rely on library subscription materials and rethink research plans.”
