Welcome Back Fall 2025!
Bargaining, Leadership, OrganizingWe highlight summer wins, our collective fight ahead, and some ways to build out our strength as a union…that means you, and it’s easier than you think!
Welcome back to our organizing mission. To be certain, our mission is about you, it is about me, it is about all of us Unit 3 folks that the Chancellor’s Office just doesn’t seem to fully respect! In this post, we want to cover some changes and updates, getting you caught up on things you may have missed this past summer!
Summer Wins – Continued Battle!
- First, we have a BIG WIN from pushing back against the jobs cuts the CSU was forcing through austerity measures. On Monday 7/21, we received official notice from systemwide labor relations that no layoffs of faculty will be forthcoming under their notice given to us earlier in the spring.
- Next, in another BIG WIN, not only did we win the rescinded notice of layoff, but we were able to coordinate our collective power to create even more positive change. Through our power, the final 2025/26 State Budget approved at the end of June eliminated the ongoing 3% cut proposed in the May Budget Revise. Our power resulted in Sacramento State’s campus restoring roughly 275 classes. Our power saved jobs for our colleagues and classes for our students. Our Union’s old adage will always ring true: When we fight, we win!
- Last, we need to keep the wins rolling, so we need to keep the fight going! Over summer, we won a brief extension in our contract, though that extension expires on September 1st. To that end, no bargaining occurred during the summer. In case you missed it, our statewide Research and Communication Team wrote about why we needed an extension during bargaining, and what is at stake if the Chancellor’s Office continues to stall and the contract is not extended beyond the September 1st deadline (Read more here). You can also see other recent Bargaining updates here.
What we need to keep focus on is making sure the power we have won, we keep! As the semester begins, we are fighting to ensure that order of assignment is followed in last-minute hires, and against the idea that we need to take out our own trash (which is the job of our union siblings – we work to protect labor, all labor). These fights take all of us, together! These wins came from faculty, including our College Advocate and Political Action teams, gathering hundreds of letters and postcards, lobbying at the Capitol, and putting pressure on the Chancellor’s office. Leadership Updates
New Leadership abound at your CFA this year. Of note, the new President of CFA statewide is the Sacramento Chapter’s former president, Margarita Berta-Ávila, who was elected unopposed. To quote our new president, “As a collective, our fight in the CFA and labor is critical and urgent. As social justice unionists, it is essential to push beyond just ‘resisting’ and organize together toward the future we envision…” We take this call to action at our local level, too.

Additionally, we announced some changes to our local leadership. All summer long, your EBoard has been preparing for leading our chapter through some rather stressful times. We have been learning how to build our power through trainings, organizing our strength, and focusing on our mission as your Sacramento Chapter of CFA.

What you can do!
As we sign off, we hope you are as excited as we are to get this union work off to a great start. We have had some great wins over the summer, but the battles of bargaining are at our doorstep. We need to stay connected and stay informed so that we stay united against an administration that is hell bent on corporatizing our system of higher education and forcing austerity. As our union president has emphasized, we must “push beyond” and “organize together” to fight back for our research, for our livelihoods, for our futures. This is an all-hands-on-deck fight. We need your skill sets, we need your minds, we need your hands….we need you. As this fall semester kicks off, we want to welcome you into our organizing mission.
We will see you at the Welcome Back Social on September 4th @ Bike Dog Brewery East Sac, and we look forward to hearing from you about what you want to do to help move our union forward! Happy fall semester and best wishes as classes get underway!
