Digital Security for Faculty to Protect Against Doxing and Online Harassment
There have been a number of faculty who’ve been subjected to online harassment and doxing of their personal information for sharing their personal opinions. This has created a chilling atmosphere on CSU campuses. In addition to increasing our digital security protocols as a union, we are also committed to supporting members with protecting themselves against these attacks.
On October 8, Kenyon Farrow, CFA’s new Director of Strategic Communications, held trainings for CFA members on digital security and how to effectively message the issues related to online harassment, doxing, and CSU’s turning over information on faculty and staff at CSU Los Angeles.
Farrow discussed the growing threat of digital harassment and doxing, emphasizing the importance of digital security for academics and students. He explained doxing, how bad actors are able to access sensitive information, and the kinds of organizations that are fueling these attacks on faculty nationwide. He also made recommendations to members on things they can do to protect themselves—whether with campus, union, or personal email and social media accounts. We recorded the digital security training and will be hosting these trainings on an ongoing basis for faculty who missed the first one, or as new faculty join the union as a proactive measure.
In addition to the recorded training, here are some other resources provided by expert organizations.
