MAY DAY! Emergency Bargaining Town Hall TODAY at 10am
CFA members have been instrumental in helping maintain the very fabric of the university through these extraordinarily challenging times.
This May Day, also known as International Workers Day, we greatly applaud the labor, courage, perseverance, and joy that our members bring to one another every day! To continue our work to support those who need it the most, we urge you to find a May Day event near you using this list. Bring your friends, family, and comrades to build and celebrate our solidarity with workers everywhere.

Working around the clock, our members ensure that faculty, students, and staff are safe, valued, and supported within our campus communities. Even in the face of great adversity, we keep resisting a chancellor and a federal administration that are dismantling the core values of education that our students deserve.
Unfortunately, CSU management has worsened these challenges with their recent conduct. During our last bargaining session, their continued lack of transparency and lack of cooperation culminated in their refusal to even meet with our CFA Bargaining Team to negotiate ground rules.
As a result, the CFA filed a Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) charge on behalf of the Bargaining Team and will be holding an emergency bargaining town hall today, May 1, from 10am to noon. We strongly encourage you to join either in-person at the Forest Suite at the Sacramento State University Union, or virtually via Zoom. You can register here. Together, we can strategize a plan of action that will help us secure a strong faculty contract.
Our struggle, however, extends far beyond the bargaining table. Management’s behavior reveals a systemic pattern of disrespect and disregard for CSU workers and students—one that emulates a broader trend at the national level.
Instead of upholding the principles of public higher education, the Chancellor’s Office has amplified its attacks on free speech with the introduction of the interim Time, Place, and Manner policy. Under Chancellor García’s leadership, the CSU has also launched a public-private initiative to make the CSU the nation’s first A.I.-powered university. This move was made without consulting the students, staff, and faculty who will be most affected. As management continues to chase luxury and profits for themselves and private interests, they place the financial burden directly onto students, making education less affordable and less accessible.
In recent months, CFA members have joined other union workers across the country to help protect the future of higher education. Beyond confronting the actions of CSU leadership, we have also pushed against the Trump administration’s suppression of free speech, its dismantling of immigrants’ rights, and its expansion of corporate influences on our public institutions.
On April 17, 2025, San Francisco State faculty, staff, and students actively participated in the National Day of Action for Higher Education, uniting to oppose proposed budget cuts, tuition hikes, and threats to academic freedom. The day’s events commenced with outdoor classes on the campus Quad, where faculty conducted sessions to visibly demonstrate their opposition to the cuts. This was followed by student-led teach-outs addressing the connections between austerity measures and capitalism, and faculty-led discussions on defending civil liberties and democratic rights, particularly focusing on the impact on international, undocumented, queer, and transgender students.
At noon, a flash speak-out and mass phone bank were held at Malcolm X Plaza, where participants contacted legislators to demand the preservation of campuses as sanctuaries for free expression. The day’s activities culminated in a march from Malcolm X Plaza to San Francisco City Hall, where CFA members rallied to advocate for the reinvestment in public higher education.
The momentum from the April 17 Day of Action seamlessly transitions into today’s May Day events, highlighting a sustained dedication to defending public higher education and advocating for workers’ rights.
This May Day, CFA members will continue to take action across the state. Click here for a list of May Day 2025 events near you!
