Remembering Workers Past and Present This Labor Day

As summer fades and fall approaches, we want to take a moment to remember and appreciate the contributions of unions and workers—both past and present—who keep our country moving forward.

Workers from all industries, including education, healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing and construction, transportation, hospitality, food services, and more have played a pivotal role in providing the labor necessary for building and sustaining our communities and our country. 

Labor Day was born out of civil unrest and a desire for political and economic reform. Employers exploited workers, subjecting them to inhumane working conditions, long uninterrupted hours, and inadequate wages.   

To recognize us as workers is to understand the struggles we face together, whether that be locally or at the national level. We have witnessed incredible acts of solidarity, altruism, and deep concern for fellow workers who have been targeted by the Trump administration’s broader campaign against immigrants and workers’ rights. Many of us continue to navigate these turbulent times, doing what we can to protect one another and keep our families together. 

Every worker deserves the dignity they are owed, and our employers must recommit to workers across this country. Our fight as CFA members is centered around racial and social justice for this very reason. We not only desire better wages and improved working conditions, but we also set our minds on the broader social and political reforms that will shift the power from the hands of a few into the hands of the many. We seek a true democratic system where our collective voices help shape a more just future. 

The only way we can accomplish this is to go in it together, and together we will persevere.
