The Department of Education’s new “Higher Education Compact” is more than a policy proposal—it’s a political test of how far the administration can go in controlling higher education. It’s part of a broader attack on public institutions, free inquiry, and the democratic values that make our universities strong.

SEIU higher education local unions across the country are calling on college and university presidents to reject this Compact. It would impose political control over what is taught, who can study or work on our campuses, how universities serve their communities, and threaten our ability to better wages and benefits.

We are asking that CFA members join other higher education faculty, staff, and administrators in urging their institutions to refuse to sign the proposal. This is our opportunity to speak with one voice—to protect the independence of our campuses and the rights of everyone who learns and works in higher education.

On Wednesday, November 12 at 4 p.m., join union members from across the country who work in universities and colleges to learn more about what we can do to push back on attacks on our wages and benefits, free speech, and access to affordable education for our students. To join the Zoom teach-in, please register here. After registering, you will get a link with instructions on how to join the teach-in.
