Hey, y’all!

This month was busy. Take a look at the work we’ve been doing around campus, the ways we’ve been finding joy, and the changes in bargaining that are meant to get us back to the table as soon as possible.

On Campus Advocacy:

On Oct. 20th, we hosted a library information gathering/organizing meeting to discuss the proposed funding cuts to the library resources. We learned a lot from librarians who attended, and set in motion a plan to attend future budget meetings and ask the administration to explain their reasoning. We can’t function effectively as an institution of higher education while simultaneously stripping away the funding for resources needed to do our jobs. The library is an essential function for students, as well. We will continue our work to restore the funds. If you want to get involved on this campaign, email Mya at mdosch@calfac.org

On Oct. 27th, CFA held a workshop devoted to Academic Freedom with a focus on things folks can do to keep themselves protected as possible. The meeting covered the threats we are facing, ways to care and support one another, as well as the faculty rights we have as a union. Here are five takeaways for faculty based on that meeting. So, even if you didn’t attend, you can still get the benefits of this labor!

Statewide Workshops:

Oct. 21, CFA Leadership held a General Bargaining meeting via Zoom and covered the changes to the PERB charge we filed against the university. As noted in the Oct. 2 message to all members, the union moved to drop the PERB charge in order to get back to the bargaining table sooner. What this means right now is that we are heading back to the bargaining table as soon as possible. Expect immediate communication as soon as we are aware of any details that can be shared. This is what we are all waiting for. If you want to be more informed, check out  the post on bargaining in the current newsletter.

On Campus Community:

On Sept. 28th, Hornet Women’s Soccer Match- Sacramento Chapter members rallied to cheer on the Sacramento State Hornet Women’s Soccer team play against Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. The match drew 1-1, but joy was had by those in attendance. It was a good chance for members to meet and enjoy the weather, the community, and camaraderie. Look for the events we have coming up in November, like a Hornet Women’s Volleyball or Hornet Men’s Basketball game!  You should join us next time!

On Oct. 26, The Sacramento Chapter CFA Membership and Organizing (M&O) Committee organized a Night Out with the University Chorale and Choral Union. The choir concert was a welcome break from the stress of organizing. We also had a chance to watch several of our members share their vocal talents, under the direction of CFA College Advocate Brett Judson. While so much of our campus work is stressful, it is events like these that build our community and keep us grounded. Thank you, M & O for helping us find joy and this concert! If you missed this concert, keep an eye out for shows we are going to meet at in the spring! Not a “show” person, then maybe you’d like to join one of our other events? College Advocate follow up! College Advocates are continuing to meet the first and third weeks of every month! Join in Brighton Hall 106, on Tuesday, from 12:30p-1:45p, or Thursday, from 1:30p-2:45p. Currently, their discussion and work is centred on the impact that recent proposals have on lecturer workload, and the unspoken administrative perspective that lecturers are expendable. The potential loss of lecturers is a workload issue for all!! How will we teach the same amount of students (or more) if lecturers aren’t stable, aren’t around? College Advocates are developing plans now for lecturers, specifically. Want to help? Reach out to Lina Rincon!

That’s a wrap!

We are in the middle of the semester, everyone. There is a lot going on. What did you miss? Want to know what is going on more regularly?

Thanks for Catching up with Us!

Sacramento Chapter Executive Board, CFA
