We want to thank every CFA member whose dedication and hard work made the passage of Prop 50 possible. Your canvassing, phone- and text-banking, and reaching out to colleagues, friends, and family showed what can be accomplished through solidarity. Together, we defended our democracy and showed that organized labor in California can lead the way.

CFA is a local affiliate or branch of our parent union, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Our union stood out across SEIU, finishing first among all locals for Voter IDs and third for total volunteer hours. This happened because our members and staff jumped in fast, coordinated with one another, updated our data, and reached out to our colleagues as well as strong Democratic nonmembers. The strong turnout showed other SEIU locals, legislators, and the Governor’s team that our members can mobilize in a big way when it counts.

Prop 50 ensures that California will not allow partisan gerrymandering in other states to undermine our representation in Congress. By temporarily adopting a legislature-drawn map for the 2026 election, Prop 50 protects fair representation for all communities, including immigrant communities and communities of color. It rejects anti-democratic tactics and shows that voters will not tolerate election manipulation. Moreover, it was passed by voters and serves only as a temporary redistricting plan.

Prop 50 is vital for the future of public higher education. Federal attacks on funding, academic freedom, and immigrant students threaten our campuses, our students, and our ability to teach and research freely. By upholding fair representation, Prop 50 helps protect public universities and the work we do to educate, research, and serve students.

Thank you again to every member who gave time, energy, and heart to this campaign. Together, we have shown that collective action can make a difference.
