Spring is Here!

Winter Break is over and we are rolling back to work. With a few weeks under our belts, surely your semester is cooking, already! Are you ready, then, to get oriented to your union happenings, what you can do to help our focus on bargaining? We are showing up this month to show our power and you should too!

There are lots of ways your CFA chapter is planning to help you show up this semester! Some ways are informative, some are fun, some are easy and some are a little more involved, but we can guarantee that showing up to any and all will show management our power, our strength, and our intention to win a contract that communicates to administration, to the state and to the world how important higher education is for the success of humanity!

Bargaining on the Brain

Bargaining is clearly on the forefront of a lot of members’ minds. It is ours, too (link to Topic 3 – Bargaining)! You might be wondering what you can do right now to help with bargaining? Turns out…It’s the same as it has always been since our early days of organizing… stay informed and show up! When we show up, we show our power!

When the CFA holds Bargaining Events…SHOW UP!

On Feb. 4, the bargaining team held a town hall that updated everyone on the disrespectful offer management made in the last round at the table. Management responded to our proposals with five counter-proposals, each of which took aim at our power as a collective by striking away established protections, like the right to file a grievance because of accommodation issues. Not sure what we are talking about? Not sure how you missed this? You need to get informed!

So be on the look out, put on your radar our Member Meeting on Wednesday, February 25th at 11:30a in the Union Forest Suite. There, Statewide CFA President Margarita Berta-Avila will share what is next for bargaining. You can also attend Bargaining Day Caucuses for Members Only, and Bargaining Town Halls hosted after each bargaining session for everyone. Showing up and learning is the best thing you can do right now. When we know, we can talk about it with others. When the word has spread, we have even greater power. So, logically, if we show up now, we may not have to show up en masse later…if you catch my drift!

When Library Funds are Threatened…SHOW UP!

When one of us is cut… we should all show up. This is an easy one. Sign the petition and show our power to the president and provost. Tell them that a fully-funded library is the best kind of library! We love our library and we need to do what we can to support our faculty librarians. Talk to your networks and tell them to sign. Tell everyone you know: Fund the Library and Fund Academics! When the CFA builds space for our community…SHOW UP!

When we show up at any CFA event (link to Topic 5 – Upcoming Events), we meet new people, we connect with them, and we find our common ground as rooted in the collective struggles we share. We need each other more than ever during bargaining. We are looking to build third-space events that are just a place to hang and share your hobbies.

When we are together we are united, and a united front is hard to break. A united front shows management we mean what we say. When sitting down at the bargaining table, it gives our team the power to negotiate from a stronger position. When asked why our demands should be met, the negotiation team can just point back to the army of faculty professors, faculty lecturers, faculty librarians, faculty counselors, and faculty coaches standing behind them, waiting to act…while maybe crafting their asses off!
