Protecting our Jobs from AI!
Memorandum of Understanding on AIA Little Backstory
Way back in 2024, the chapter filed an unfair labor practice charge against campus administration after the now-defunct Sacramento State National Institution on Artificial Intelligence in Society released custom chatbots to interpret the CBA, and perform other work typically done by faculty. When CFA leaders exercised our right to negotiate over this change in our working conditions, the administration refused.
We Now Have Resolve!
We are happy to announce that at long last, and after the Public Employee’s Relations Board (PERB) ruled in our favor, administration settled with us and admitted we have a right to negotiate the use of AI on campus.
Key parts of the settlement include:
- Administrators will not implement AI or chatbots without first giving us the chance to negotiate the implementation;
- Administrators will give CFA notice when it plans to deploy AI in a way that affects the work faculty, librarians, coaches and counselors do;
- The university will provide the chapter with a list of all instances of AI use by the end of May.
This important win protects faculty from being forced to use AI, and protects faculty who choose to use AI in their work. It also supports our ongoing contract negotiations, where we are fighting for a contract article that protects our jobs from being replaced with AI, while giving faculty the freedom to use and teach with this emerging technology.
This is your CFA chapter faculty rights team at work!
