We, as CFA Sacramento, have made strides in 2025-26 to improve faculty working conditions and student learning conditions on our campus. Here are just some of our wins this year:

  • Our lobbying also helped lead to a 5% increase to the 2026-27 CSU State budget! We need to keep pushing to ensure these funds are spent on the classroom, not the boardroom.
  • Our budget advocacy on campus lead President Wood to commit to the following priorities with additional state funds:
    • #1 More classes
    • #2 Funding for the Library
    • #3 Enrollment
    • #4 Additional funding to Academic Affairs / funds to the Colleges for faculty and staff hiring
  • Our work began  to reverse years of devastating library budget cuts. Our advocacy brought $3 million in one-time funds to the Library, and we are still working for long-term, ongoing funding solutions.
  • Our lobbying at the state Capitol led to an increased CSU budget for this academic year. This resulted in 315 additional class sections being offered on our campus. This means students are able to keep their graduation goals and more work for lecturers.
  • Our faculty rights team pushed for a Memorandum of Understanding on AI that ensures that no Unit 3 labor on our campus can be outsourced to AI bots without CFA consultation.
  • Our member-leaders pushed campus administration to develop a response plan if I.C.E. arrives on campus that is accessible to ALL members of our community. This included a two-way text system to report ICE on campus. You can now text the number 916-299-3400 to communicate with our university designated administrators, Bill Hébert or Machelle Martin, if you suspect ICE activity on campus. We also offered training for faculty on ICE preparedness and advocated for the Campus Activities Response Team (CART) to be trained, as well. Want us to come to your department? • Our faculty rights team responded to over 100 inquiries from Sacramento State coaches, counselors, librarians and other faculty, ensuring their rights were protected and the contract was respected! Faculty members on our Faculty Rights team help folks to write RTP rebuttals, navigate parental leave, ensure they get classes they are entitled to, negotiate questions about management, and more!
  • Our advocacy resulted in clear and accountable processes for International Faculty. On our suggestion, Provost Cameron held an International Faculty Forum in Fall 2026. We are closely tracking progress toward alleviating the MANY issues heard in this forum. Most recently, we successfully pushed the university to return to the practice of paying for Premium Processing for all International faculty in immigration processes, so that they can receive determinations more quickly in this climate of fear.
  • Our efforts with the Provost produced a Memo on the Effects of Federal Cuts on Retention, Tenure and Promotion (RTP) that faculty can use to explain how current federal hostility to DEI/Research/Higher Education has affected their work.
  • Our College Advocates team developed this guide to supporting lecturer faculty for chairs and tenure-track faculty, and we consulted closely with departments on these issues.
  • Our union hosted workshops on “Your Academic Freedom Rightsand ensured faculty rights when classes are recorded. Visit the Disability Access Center website clear guidelines for students with accommodations who record classes, and email Joanna at j.nunez@csus.edu if you’d like to schedule an Academic Freedom presentation for your department.
  • And, our collective hosted fellow CFA members for:
    • two general member meetings,
    • two budget listening sessions,
    • two Lecturer 101 sessions,
    • two Anti-Racism and Social Justice Workshops,
    • five outings to cultural/sports events to support fellow CFA members,
    • two statewide kickoff events
    • two statewide assemblies
    • and three celebratory socials!

In CFA, we look out for each other!
