No Contract Extensions This Time Around!
contract prepWith our contract set to expire on June 30th, here’s what faculty can expect come July 1st, what rights we retain, and what we’re watching for.
Bargaining has stalled! We are being stonewalled by the administration’s bargaining team, who refuse to meet us at the bargaining table. While spending more of our money, and wasting more of our time, management also forces small but powerful changes to our contract, even when they don’t show up to bargain.
In past contract years, CFA and CSU management have managed to come to terms on a short contract extension as bargaining was taking place. This cycle, an extension of our existing contract is not on the table. Management’s general intransigence and unwillingness to meet us face to face removed that possibility. On June 30, 2025 our current contract will expire. If you have been here long enough, you have likely seen this happen several times before but it may not be familiar to newer faculty, so here is what this means:
Under California labor law, we revert to “status quo.” The contract remains in effect and its terms must still be adhered to, with a couple of caveats:
- The Chancellor’s office will likely exercise their right to stop processing grievances past Level 1. This means that anything we would have appealed to the CO for Level 2 will be placed in a holding queue until we get a new contract. This effectively brings the contractual grievance process to a halt. The statutory process remains in place and we will continue to seek informal resolutions and Level 1 resolutions when possible.
- In AY 2020-2021 we negotiated an expanded eligibility provision for lecturer range elevation based on a “full-time adjusted service” calculation under Article 12.17. This was renewed in one-year intervals since but was not made a permanent part of the contract. The renewal of FTAS for 2024-25 will thus expire on June 30 and we will revert to the previous way we calculated eligibility. This reversion means far fewer lecturers will be able to apply for range elevation in the coming fall. Making the expanded eligibility permanent has always been a goal and remains so for the current bargaining cycle.
