Our Latest Win
Withdrawal of “No Leave Taken” PolicyThanks to union pressure, management has backed off the “No Leave Taken” policy. Here’s what changed and how we made it happen.
A win is a win, and we need to celebrate all our battles won! It was an important battle that beat back administrative overreach while showing the disrespect current management has for the terms of agreements past.
Back in September, we notified you that we had filed an unfair practice charge against the CSU for unilaterally violating our memorandum of understanding on reporting “no leave taken.” In brief, we had a signed agreement that exempts tenure-track and lecturer faculty from having to report when they do not use any leave. The CSU began requiring we make such a report beginning in December of 2024. We pushed back to make the CSU honor their agreements.
We are very pleased to report to you that the CSU essentially caved and will not require that we report “no leave taken” moving forward. The details were released last Friday, May 2, in an email from Academic Affairs. In response we agreed to withdraw our charge from PERB and consider the matter now settled – our existing MOU remains in force.
This success is only made possible through the strength of our membership and our continued solidarity with each other. We need that strength now more than ever as we stand up against an intransigent management bargaining team and push back against relentless attacks on higher education and our shared mission of quality, equitable, and just education for the people of California. We hope you will help us build on this success by joining CFA today. If you are already a member, reaching out to a non-member colleague and asking them to join. When we fight as one, we win!
