This week, members across the state came together to speak directly with lawmakers about issues impacting education, student learning, faculty working conditions, health and safety, racial and social justice, and a just and adequate budget to fulfill the mission of the CSU.

One of the highlights of Lobby Days was a reception for CFA Legislators of the Year. CFA is excited to announce our 2023 Legislators of the Year: State Senator John Laird and Assemblymember Mike Fong. Both elected officials are aligned with advancing anti-racism and social justice initiatives in the CSU and in California.

“Senator Laird and Assemblymember Fong have been reliable partners in our ongoing fight for the funding needed to fulfil our vision of an equitable CSU,” said CFA President Charles Toombs. “We look forward to continuing to work together and win legislation rooted in anti-racism and social justice.”

Senator Laird has been a longtime friend of CFA. As Senate Education Budget chair, he has led the efforts to fully fund the workers and students of the CSU. He profoundly understands education policy and has consistently been an accessible, committed, bold public servant. We also honor his legacy as one of the first LGBTQIA+ elected leaders in the State and continue to partner with him on LGBTQIA+ issues.

From the Los Angeles Community College District to the State Assembly, Mike Fong has proven to be a champion for public higher education. As an APIDA leader and chair of the Assembly Education budget committee, Fong has strongly advocated for CFA’s budget and policy priorities. He is a coalition builder with deep ties to CFA leaders and members. We honor CFA’s friend Mike Fong.
