Margarita Berta-Ávila, CFA President and Sacramento State professor, gave a speech at a rally on Monday for one of our union’s endorsed candidates for governor, Xavier Becerra.

More than a hundred people filled the Nest, Sacramento State’s gym, to support Becerra with less than a month left before voting ends.

Berta-Ávila noted that CFA was an early supporter of Becerra, who surged from single digits in the polls to become one of the leading candidates for governor. She said our union recognized his decades of public service, determination, character, and leadership in tough times.

“He is committed to the promise of accessible public higher education, to the sanctity of academic freedom, and to ethnic studies,” Berta-Ávila said. “He will center students, workers, and communities as well – and this is important – as well as the dignity of everyday people.”

Besides CFA, other unions with strong support at the rally included LIUNA (Laborers’ International Union of North America) Local 185. Becerra was a former member of that union, as was his father.

With three weeks left in the June primary election, Becerra asked the audience to vote early and tell friends and family to support him.

“Let us win this together for California, for all the working families,” Becerra said.

Becerra also responded to questions on homelessness, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), K-12 education, and housing for renters. He promised to fight against the crisis of affordability and the many manufactured and unnecessary crisises coming from Washington, D.C., too.

CFA’s dual endorsement for governor includes Tony Thurmond as well as Xavier Becerra. Vote by June 2.
